GENERAL APPEARANCE : Of agile appearance, with free movement. Resistant coat. The Cairn Terrier is naturally apt to work.
 

Personality:  Smart, alert and agile.
 

Energy Level : Moderately active.  
 

Good with children:  Yes.

 

Good with other dogs:  With supervision.

 

Grooming:  Seasonal.

 

Life Expectancy : 12-15  years old.

Bark Level: Bark when needed.

  • HISTORICAL SUMMARY  

Is  breed  in  dogs  formerly called short-haired skyes terriers. Considered docile, although daring, and that does not require much care, its current name was inspired by its function to scare away pests and prey hidden in piles of  stones  called Cairns. classified as  cheerful, mischievous and authoritarian animals, they adapt easily to  families  who live both in the countryside and in the city and whose members are active.

Country of Origin: Great Britain.

BEHAVIOR AND TEMPERAMENT:  Has a cheerful, friendly temperament  and should give the impression of being alive. Very safe and brave but not aggressive.
 

HEAD: Small in size, but proportionate to the body.

Skull: Broad, with depression between the eyes.
 

Stop : Well defined.
 

  • FACIAL REGION

 

Snout:  Powerful.
 

Truffle: Black.

Jaws and Teeth:  Scissor bite with strong jaws.
 

Lips: Well developed and firm.

 

Expression: Alive and joyful.

Eyes: Hazel or brown, set apart and of medium size.
 

Ears : Set not too close together, small, pointed, well carried and erect.
 

NECK : Of medium size, well set.

Loin: Strong, elastic.
 

Back: Well developed.

TAIL: Set on medium, short length, without fringes.

Shoulders:  obliques

Elbows : Close to the chest, never turning out.
 

Feet: Larger than the hind foot, with thick pads. They can turn out slightly.
 

HINDQUARTERS

Hocks: Well let down.

Thighs:
  Well developed, strong and muscular.

Feet : Smaller than the previous one, with thick pads.  They can turn out slightly.

  • GAIT/MOVEMENT: Light and fluent movement, forelimbs with good reach and hindquarters giving propulsion.
     

  • COAT

Coat : Double-coated, abundant, rough coat. The undercoat is short and closed. Light curling is allowed.

  • COLOR: Red, cream, wheat, gray or almost black. Brindle is allowed in all  the colors.

 

SIZE: Females - 28  at 30  cm/Males - 30  at 33  cm

  • FAULTS  

Any deviation from this standard should be considered a fault and penalized in exact proportion to its severity and its effects on the health and well-being of the dog.  

DISQUALIFYING FAULTS

 

• Aggressiveness or excessive shyness.

• Any dog that shows any sign of physical or behavioral anomaly must be disqualified.

• Atypical dogs.
